Fifty years ago this month, legendary Wales & Lions half backs Gareth Edwards and Barry John met on our ground (previously Trinity College playing fields) for a try out before playing their first match together for Wales.
Barry was at Trinity College and suggested that Gareth come down to 'get used to each other' before playing against the All Blacks 1967. It had rained solidly for 48 hours and the Johnstown pitch was flooded, hardly the best conditions to run around in their 'daps'. In the end, Barry uttered those immortal words ' You throw it & I'll catch it' - the rest as they say is history.
The pair went on to play 23 times together for Wales and of course the four 1971 tests for the Lions in the 2-1 victorious series against the All Blacks in New Zealand.
Their boots hang proudly on display at our clubhouse.
